The Copa do Brasil is a domestic knockout competition taking place every season and is open to 92 clubs representing all 26 Brazilian states and the Federal District. It’s the Brazilian equivalent of football events such as the FA Cup, DFB Pokal and Copa del Rey.
Many fans across Brazil view the Copa do Brasil as having greater or equal importance to the Brazilian league, and it’s also a chance for smaller teams to play against some of the most famous soccer clubs in the world.
The prize money for winning the Copa do Brasil is higher than that for winning the Campeonato Brasileiro, but there’s extra incentive for teams to perform well as winners automatically qualify for the next season of the Copa Libertadores.
History of the Cop do Brasil
In 1987, 13 of Brazil’s biggest soccer clubs broke away from the Campeonato Brasileiro due to financial difficulties facing the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF). As a result, several state soccer federations were concerned about having fewer big games.
In response to these issues, the CBF created the Copa do Brasil, which promoted the state championships that were no longer represented in the Campeonato Brasileiro. From the very first edition, clubs taking part all had a chance to qualify for the Copa Libertadores, which increased the level of prestige and competition.
The first edition of the Copa do Brasil took place in 1989 with Gremio crowned champions after winning the final against Sport Club do Recife. Since then, the cup has been won by a total of 17 teams, with Cruzeiro holding the record number of wins at 6.
The competition initially featured 32 clubs in a two-legged knockout format with away goals. However, it was expanded over the years and today features 92 clubs.

The Copa do Brasil is a knockout tournament featuring two single-legged rounds with two weeks of knockout games before the two-legged fixtures start in the third round. Teams enter the Copa do Brasil based on their rankings in the previous season.
