What is Liga MX?
Liga MX is the top professional division of Mexican soccer. The league takes place every season and features two separate tournaments known as the Apertura and Clausura. Matches in the Liga MX draw the biggest crowds of any soccer games in the Americas and the third-largest crowds of any professional sports league in North America, only behind the NFL and MLB.
Similar to other Latin American soccer leagues, such as the Uruguayan and Colombian leagues, Liga MX teams play two tournaments. Up to six teams from Liga MX can also qualify for the CONCACAF Champions Cup, while clubs taking part in the league can also participate in the Leagues Cup with MLS teams.
History of the Liga MX
In 1902, the Liga Mexicana de Football Amateur Association was formed. This was the first ever football league to exist in Mexico, though it was at an amateur level, with teams consisting of football fans and company workers. Between 1902 and 1922, a total of 22 teams participated in the league. Most of these teams were based in Mexico City, and only a few, such as Club America and Cub de Futbol Pachuca, still exist today.
Although amateur football competitions such as the Liga Mexicana de Football Amateur Association were regularly held within geographical regions of the country, it wasn’t until 1943 that the first national professional league was formed. Originally known as Liga Mayor, this competition would go on to become the Liga MX that fans know and love today.
The Liga Mayor was formed from 10 clubs, with 6 from the Liga Mexicana de Football Amateur Association, 2 from the Liga Occidental and 2 from the Liga Veracruzana. The inaugural season for the Liga Mayor was won by Asturias, and since then, there have been 23 champions.
America are the most successful club in Liga MX history, with a total of 16 titles. Guadalajara are in second place with 12 championships, although they haven’t won since the Clausura in 2017.
Format & Schedule of Liga MX
Since the 1996/97 season, Liga MX has been split into two separate tournaments, with a champion declared for each one. Originally known as Verano and Invierno, today, these tournaments are known as Clausura and Apertura.
The Apertura tournament lasts between July and December, while the Clausura follows between January and May. 18 teams in the league play each opponent once, earning points for winning and drawing games. The top 6 teams progress to the Liguilla, the finals stage of the tournament, while the next 4 teams qualify for the play-in round to determine the remaining 2 spots in Liguilla.
The liguilla stage of the tournament features two-legged ties, with aggregate scores determining which team progresses to the next round. At the end of the tournament, the winner is crowned the champion, so there can be two champions each season.
An aggregate table which adds together points earned during the Apertura and Clausura tournaments is used to determine CONCACAF Champions League qualification and seedings for the Leagues Cup.
