What is the PFL MMA league?
The PFL is an American mixed martial arts promotion widely known as the world’s second-largest MMA organisation. It originally started as a league format with a regular season, playoffs and a championship rather than year-round events.
PFL MMA became known for its $1 million prize fund for championship winners. It also established multiple regional events in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, featuring local prospects and upcoming fighters. These features have helped it stand out from other promotions, such as the UFC, and make an impression on fans.
How the PFL MMA league format works
As of 2026, the PFL format is now similar to other MMA promotions like the UFC, Rizin FF and Cage Warriors. Each weight class has one champion, and traditional matchmaking ranks fighters and creates the best fights for each event.
There are 8 weight divisions in the PFL: men’s bantamweight, featherweight, lightweight, welterweight, middleweight, light heavyweight, heavyweight and women’s flyweight.
Throughout the year, the PFL holds multiple main events in cities across the US, while its regional leagues across Africa and MENA continue to follow a single-elimination seasonal tournament format as a development pathway for emerging talent.
How fighters qualify
Fighters can enter the PFL based on their performances in regional promotions. By winning fights against strong opposition in smaller promotions, fighters have a chance of attracting the attention of larger fighting organisations like the PFL.
The PFL holds regular international events such as PFL Africa and PFL MENA. These events help to highlight upcoming prospects from different regions. There is no single qualification route into the main PFL roster. Fighters who perform well on one of these events can earn a full contract and a place on a major PFL fight card.
The PFL MMA structure uses rankings, based on recent performances and results. Fighters can climb the rankings by beating opponents in their division in order to earn a shot at the title.

PFL & MMA betting tips, predictions & strategies
Stylistic matchups: In MMA, styles make fights, and while most modern fighters are well-rounded, they still typically excel in certain areas while having weaknesses in others. For example, a grappling expert might struggle with striking exchanges. It’s important to consider these stylistic matchups when making your picks.
Research your bets: There are a lot of detailed statistics and data available online to give you better insights into the fights and the likely outcomes. Pay attention to recent form, overall records and the quality of each fighter’s recent opposition. Consider whether or not the tournament format will likely have an impact on their performance, and don’t forget to check out fight videos online.
Live betting: Live betting offers an excellent opportunity to get better odds on your bets. As the fight happens, the odds and lines will move in real time, and if you’re smart, you can take advantage of this. Make sure you tune into the free live stream at the same time, that way you’ll have a better understanding of the fight.
