What is the Women's National Basketball Association?

The Women’s National Basketball Association, better known as the WNBA, is the premier women’s basketball league. It’s a professional basketball league in the US that, like the NBA, features franchised teams nationwide.

The WNBA was officially sanctioned by the NBA at the start of the 1996/97 season, when it started with just 8 teams. Today, it features 15 teams from across North America, competing at the highest level of women’s basketball.

Teams in the WNBA compete across the regular season, the Commissioner’s Cup, playoffs and the Finals.

WNBA betting markets include match winner bets, player performance props and season-long outright bets.

How the WNBA season format works

15 teams currently compete in the WNBA, with the regular season running between May and September each year.

For the 2026 season, the WNBA was expanded from 13 to 15 teams. The Portland Fire and Toronto Tempo joined the league, one year after the addition of the Golden State Valkyries. Toronto became the first WNBA team based outside the US.

Teams are divided into Eastern and Western conferences, but they play all opponents in the league regardless of conference. Teams are ranked by win-loss record, and every team plays 44 games. At the end of the regular season, the top 8 teams qualify for the playoffs.

Midway through the season, the WNBA holds the Commissioner’s Cup. The team from each conference with the top record in designated cup games will compete for the title. There’s also an annual All-Star game, which takes place in late July.

The WNBA playoffs pit the league's top teams against each other to determine the champions. The higher seeded team gets the home-court advantage in the early rounds of the playoffs. The first round is played to the best of 3 games, while the semifinals are played to the best of 5. Since 2025, the WNBA Finals have been contested over a best-of-7 series.

The Las Vegas Aces (formerly the San Antonio Stars) are the current WNBA Champions after winning their 3rd title in the 2025 season.

The most successful teams in WNBA history are the Houston Comets (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000), Minnesota Lynx (2011, 2013, 2015, and 2017) and Seattle Storm (2004, 2010, 2018, and 2020), with four titles apiece.

Expansion has increased the number of teams competing in the WNBA. The league has grown from 8 teams when it was first formed to 15 teams in 2026. A new team will also join the WNBA in 2028, 2029 and 2030, bringing the eventual total to 18.

The 2026 WNBA season is well underway with playoffs just around the corner. Here are some key dates for this season, including upcoming WNBA fixtures and dates you should be aware of.

• 30 June - Commissioner’s Cup Final

• 25 July - WNBA All-Star Game

• 24 September - End of the regular season

• 27 September - First round of the playoffs

• 4 October - Semifinals of playoffs

• 17 October - Finals begin

WNBA 2026 outright winner and season-long markets

Types of WNBA bets explained

There are lots of WNBA sports betting markets available at Stake, including:

• Moneyline/Winner (Inc. Overtime) - this is a bet on a team to win a specific WNBA fixture and is perhaps the easiest way to bet on women's basketball.

• Handicap (Inc. Overtime) - a bet on a team to win a fixture. However, the favourite has a points handicap they must overcome for your bet to win.

• Total (Inc. Overtime) - a bet on the total number of points you think will be scored in a WNBA match (over/under the points line set).

• Winning Margin – a wager on the number of points that you think a team will win a fixture by.

• Will there be Overtime – a self-explanatory basketball bet on whether or not you think a period of overtime will be played.

• Quarters/Half - proposition bets you can place on the action in a specific quarter or half (e.g. which team will win the first quarter).
