What is the Uruguayan Primera Division?
The Uruguayan Primera Division is the highest level of football in Uruguay, a country that has produced soccer stars such as Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani and Diego Forlan. The league consists of 16 clubs which compete each season for a chance to be crowned champions.
The top 2 sides in the aggregate table at the end of the season qualify for the Copa Libertadores group stage next season, while the 3rd place team enters the second stage of next season’s second stage of Copa Libertadores qualifying and the 4th place team enters the first stage of qualifying.
History of the Uruguayan Primera Division
The Uruguayan Primera Division was established in 1900 by the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF). The first-ever season was held in the same year and featured just 4 teams, competing in a round-robin tournament.
The first season of the Primera Division was won by the Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club (CURCC), which scored 36 goals in 6 games while conceding just 2. Of the founding 4 teams, Albion is the only team that still exists today, currently playing in the Segunda Division. However, the members of the CURCC broke away from the railway company to form their own team, which became known as CA Peñarol.
The Segunda Division was formed in 1903, although the promotion and relegation system didn’t exist consistently. This second division was replaced by the Divisional Intermedia in 1915, which was replaced by the Primera Division B in 1942, which was replaced by the Segunda Division Professional in 1996.
10 different clubs have won the Primera Division in the history of the competition. Peñarol is the most successful team if you include titles won by CURCC. They have a total of 52 championships, including the 2024 season. Nacional are the second-most successful team, with 49 titles, while the 3rd-placed teams have just 4 titles.
Format & Schedule of Uruguayan Primera Division
The modern editions of the Uruguayan Primera Division seasons feature 16 teams. It has a unique format compared to major European soccer leagues such as the Premier League and La Liga.
The 2025 Primera Division season is split between three separate tournaments. These are the Torneo Apertura (Opening Tournament), the Torneo Intermedio (Intermediate Tournament) and the Torneo Clausura (Closing Tournament).
For the opening and closing tournaments, teams play every other opponent once, earning 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. The winners of each tournament then face off in a playoff to determine the overall winner of the Primera Division.
For the Torneo Intermedio, teams are split into two groups based on their standing in the Torneo Apertura. Each side then plays each opponent in their group once, and the group winners advance to the Torneo Intermedio final.
Meanwhile, an aggregate table that calculates the average number of points earned per game over the 2024 and 2025 seasons is used to determine relegation. The 3 teams with the lowest average are relegated to the Segunda Division for the following season.
The season aggregate table also adds up the points won by each team in each match played. At the end of the season, the top two teams qualify for the Copa Libertadores group stage, teams 3 and 4 qualify for the second and first qualifying stage, and teams 5-7 qualify for the first stage of the Copa Sudamericana qualifying.
